Discards, curated by Janell Baxter, offers a mixed reality experience with a card set and a virtual exhibit at Second Life's 8th Birthday (SL8B) party. Visitors to the 3D immersive virtual world can experience the artwork with other avatars at the weeklong festival and art show. The Discards trading card set with eight images by four new media artists is also available in limited quantity for purchase.
Each Discards artist created two images based on a found discarded item. The transformation from trash into virtual art into collectible art object relates the transmediative process inherent in cultural consumption and ephemera, and the experimental nature of digital formats such as virtual worlds.
Second Life's 8th Birthday opens June 20 and runs through June 26. The Discards show celebration will include a live mixed reality internet radio broadcast on www.slaminternetradio.com. Artists participating are: Janell Baxter, Claudia Laska, Janet Rooney and Andrew Oleksiuk.
